The Government of India is steadfast in its commitment to providing generic medicines at affordable prices through the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). In a recent update to the Rajya Sabha, significant progress was highlighted regarding the operational status of Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) in Kushinagar district and the broader national roadmap. The government has set an ambitious target to increase the number of JAKs across the country to 25,000 by March 2027.

Strengthening Logistics
To ensure medicines are always available, the implementing agency, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), has established a robust IT-enabled supply chain. This currently includes:
- 5 Central Warehouses
- 41 Distributors across India
New Incentive Scheme (Since Sept 2024)
To prevent stockouts of essential drugs, the government has introduced incentives for JAK owners. They are eligible for monthly benefits if they maintain stocks of 200 commonly used medicines (comprising the top 100 best-sellers and 100 fast-moving market drugs).
Forecasting & Monitoring
PMBI is now regularly monitoring 400 fast-moving products and using digitized forecasting methods to automate the procurement process, ensuring supply gaps are minimized.
The scheme is open to individual entrepreneurs, NGOs, trusts, and private companies. Applications can be submitted online at www.janaushadhi.gov.in. Furthermore, the Department of Pharmaceuticals is actively requesting State Governments to provide rent-free space in government hospitals and PHCs to host new centers.
Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Smt. Anupriya Patel, provided these details in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, emphasizing the government's focus on augmenting the reach of the Janaushadhi scheme.
